What is a healthy BMI range?
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is in the obese range.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In imperial units it is (pounds ÷ inches²) × 703. This calculator does the math for you in both unit systems.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a useful general screening tool but it does not measure body fat directly. Very muscular people may read high, and it is not intended for children, pregnant women or athletes.
